Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is a well-known health issue among dachshund owners like us. It is estimated that approximately 25% of dachshunds experience this condition. Sadly, one of our own pups received a diagnosis of IVDD in 2022. In the beginning, we couldn't understand why. We've always been extremely careful when picking them up, using both hands for complete support. We have ramps all over the house (seriously, they're everywhere). And we've been very diligent about their diet and weight. So it was really tough to process.

We discovered through extensive research and expert opinion that the dachshund breed has a genetic predisposition to develop IVDD, and that the so 'well known' precautions are just preventive measures. Fortunately, we were able to cover the cost of surgery and endure the lengthy rehabilitation. Thanks to the combination of both, our furry friend is now able to walk with ease on his own. From firsthand experience it has shown us just how expensive this process can be, and sadly, not every dog owner can afford it. We firmly believe every dog deserves a fair chance at recovery. That's why we created the 'Wiener On Wheels' project.
